The Woes of a Perfectionist – Absolute or Relative?

I have had a lot of great comments on my post about The One and Only Correct Decision, so I thought I’d continue on this topic.  As I said, perfectionists tend to think that there is one, and ONLY one, right decision to be made.  They usually think in absolute, instead of relative terms.  And what do I mean by that?

To think in absolute terms means that there is only one right decision to be made for all time.

To think in relative terms means that it is the right decision for right now, considering all of the variables.  But that could change, which may then require re-visiting a decision, and possibly modifying it.

So instead of thinking that you made a mistake if a decision needs changing, think of yourself as being flexible and responding appropriately to the current situation.  And this doesn’t mean that you will always be changing your mind, but rather refining a decision you already made.  And if your decision requires a complete about face, well, we’ll talk about that next time.

For now, just ask yourself when you are struggling with a decision, “am I thinking of this a a final decision, that can never be changed, or can I accept it as the best decision for now, and be flexible with it later if necessary?”

Until next time…
