Fear of Success

Yes, some people are very afraid of success, and procrastinate to avoid it. Are you one of these people?  When you imagine yourself being successful, what feelings come up?  If you panic, or feel awful dread, you could be struggling with fear of success.

So what is so fearful about being successful?  There can be many reasons, and I’ll address one of them now.

Do you ever say to yourself, “Once I do the work it takes to succeed, I’ll never be able to stop working!  I’ll become a workaholic!  I’ll never be able to have fun again!”

Does this sound familiar?  It’s as if work will take over and you’ll have no control to stop it.  So how does procrastination fit in the picture?  You might have a month to complete a project, and you decide to wait until the last week.  Why?  To avoid having to work so hard for a month!  This way you can enjoy three weeks, and only work for one.  If you work for a month, you will have no down time, no fun in your life.

And this is what you need to question.  Is it really true that you can’t set boundaries around your work?  That you can’t have work and play time scheduled?  That work has all the power and you have no control?

If this applies to you, you might want to ponder these questions the next time you find yourself procrastinating in order to not work too hard.

Until next time….
